(919) 278-7555 1-800-675-7804 License #1435 Leland man guilty of animal cruelty charges A Leland man whose house was full of stray cats pled guilty last Wed nesday in Brunswick County District Court to 13 counts of cruelty to animals, 21 counts of having un vaccina ted animals, 21 counts of maintain ing animals in unsanitary conditions and nine counts of failure to bury dead animals. On October 2, animal control officers seized 21 cats and removed the decomposing bodies of nine others from the home of Herbert Frink Bagemihl. Cat feces completely covered the floors and the house was in fested with fleas, said animal control supervisor Robert GrissetL Bagemihl, who is in his 60s, was given a two-year suspended sentence, placed on supervised probation and ordered to pay $1,263 restitution to the Brunswick County Animal Control Center for vaccinations, veterinary at tention and boarding costs for the cats. Bagemihl was also ordered not to keep any animals for two years. Grissett said it took all five of his animal control officers about two and a half hours to capture the cats and remove the carcasses. One of the officers was severely bitten and had to receive rabies shots. Animal control obtained a search warrant to inspect Bagemihl’s house after a neighbor complained about a strong odor coming from inside the house. first appearance, probable cause hearing November 12.
